Remembering Bolivar

On this day in 1783, Simón Bolívar, often referred to as “El Libertador” (“The Liberator”), was born in Caracas, Venezuela.

Revered as both a political and military leader, Bolivar led the revolution in most of modern South America, allowing countries in the region to establish themselves as sovereign states that were independent of Spanish rule.

The Republic of Bolivia was created in 1825 and named in honor of Bolivar’s resistance movement.

He is hailed as a hero in most of South America.

Bolivar died on Dec. 17, 1830, in Colombia.
