Jared Kushner to Receive Águila Azteca

Mexico’s outgoing president, Enrique Peña Nieto, will arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Friday, Nov. 29, to participate in the G-20 meeting, sign the latest draft for the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) – which will replace the current North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) – and present U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner with the nation’s highest honor for foreigners, the Orden de la Águila Azteca.
The Águila Azteca (Aztec Eagle) award, which was first established in 1933 by then-Mexican President Abelardo L. Rodríguez, is presented to non-Mexicans in recognition of their service to the country or for humanitarian acts.
Peña Nieto will bestow the medallion to Kushner in appreciation for his role in helping to jumpstart the USMCA trade accord.
Nevertheless, many Mexicans are infuriated by Peña Nieto’s decision to give Kushner the Águila Azteca because they perceive his father-in-law to have anti-Mexican views, as expressed by his often-offensive anti-immigrant rhetoric, particularly during his 2016 campaign.
Immediately after his participation in the G.20 summit on Friday, Peña Nieto is due to return to Mexico to attend the inauguration of his successor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on Saturday, Dec. 1.
Peña Nieto served a six-year term as Mexico’s president.
A disgrace to honor him or his family with Mexico’s highest award…a slap in the face for so many U.S. citizens in Mexico that have lived here for years and actually contributed and participated at grass-roots level.
