Polish Sailing Ship Docks in Acapulco

The Polish sailing ship Dar Młodzieży (Gift of Youth) docked in Acapulco, Guerrero, on Wednesday, Jan. 9, and will remain there through Friday, Jan. 11.

The ship, which is making a worldwide friendship tour to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Poland’s Nov. 11 1918 restoration of independence.

The three-mast tall ship, more than 300 feet long and weighing 2,255 gross tons, has been cruising around the world from its home in Gdynia Maritime University since May.

During its visit to Mexico, the crew will meet with local officials and members of the local Polish community.

Poland gained its independence following the defeat of the Central Powers – Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire – in World War I. The armistice was signed on Nov. 11, 1918.
