Mexico’s most important festival of Japanese butoh dance theater will be held in Mexico City starting on Tuesday, April 30.

The two-week festival, titled “Cuerpos en Revuelta” (”Bodies in Revolt”), is being sponsored by the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) and will be spread out across six different venues throughout the city.

It will include performances of renowned Japanese butoh artists Minako Seki and Saga Kobayashi.

There will also be performances by Mexican and U.S. butoh dancers.

In addition to the performances, there will be a series of lectures and symposiums on butoh art at the INBAL’s National School of Classic and Contemporary Dance,

Uniquely Japanese in origin, butoh developed in the late 1950s in response to post-WWII industrialization as a blend of dance and theater with a touch of the macabre.

The themes of the performances are often equally grisly, dealing with complex social and psychological topics.
