The Mexican government is now fleshing out details of a national infrastructure plan intended to stimulate the economy, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Currently, a joint working group consisting of business people and government officials is defining which projects would be implemented, the president said at his daily morning press conference at the National Palace.

“There are going to be 1,600 projects overall, and right now (the joint working group) is selecting the projects and establishing which can be funded from the public budget and which from private investment, and how agreements between the private, public and social sectors can be made,” he said.

“The goal is to revive the economy, create jobs and improve social welfare,” López Obrador said, adding that the details of the initiative will be made available soon.

According to the Bank of Mexico, the country’s GDP is expected to grow between 0.2 and 0.7 percent this year, compared to 2 percent growth in 2019.
