Mexico City Police Chief Omar García Harfuch was gunned down in an assassination attempt against him in the early hours of Friday, June 26, in front of his Lomas de Chapultepec home in Mexico City.

García Harfuch suffered injuries in the attack, which according to reports from residents living near the assault lasted more than 15 minutes, and at least two of his bodyguards died in the shootout.

According to some media reports, at least two police officers were also injured.

According to Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, García Harfuch suffered three bullet wounds and was hospitalized but is expected to recover.

The attack, which began at about 6:38 a.m. at the crossing of Avenida Paseo de la Reforma and Monte Blanco, is believed to have been organized by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in retaliation for the government’s attempts to rein in the cartel.

Later in the morning, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) brushed off the attack, saying that the incidence was the consequence of his administration’s efforts to reduce violence nationwide.

Nonetheless, since AMLO took office in December 2018, violence in Mexico has continued to increase, with the nation reporting the highest number of murders in Mexican history last year, and the figures continuing to rise so far this year.
