The Mexican branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints — often informally known as the LDS Church or Mormon Church — donated 38,500 “despensas” (basic food baskets) to underprivileged families across all the country’s 32 states on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
The donations, which are part of the church’s umbrella outreach campaign of #ConstruyendoPuentes (#BuildingBridges), were distributed to families who have been financially effected by the still-spreading covid-19 pandemic through the nonprofit Cáritas México foundation.
The donation was realized through financial contributions from the LDS Church congregation members amounting to 7.7 million pesos.
The distribution of the despensas was supervised by Cáritas Mexicana through various Catholic dioceses and archdioceses.
The president of the Mormon Church in Mexico, Russell M. Nelson, explained that the donations were part of a global LDS humanitarian effort to help victims of the coronavirus pandemic.
