Mexico’s ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), which has been struggling to hold internal elections since November 2019, voted on Sunday, Aug. 30, for its acting interim leader Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar to serve as Senate majority leader.

Ramírez Aguilar will formally take the position on Tuesday, Sept. 1, when the Mexican Congress reconvenes for its Ordinary Session and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) is due to deliver his second State of the Nation Address.

The announcement of Ramírez Aguilar’s election was made by the current Senate whip Ricardo Monreal, who also noted that Imelda Castro will serve as Ramírez Aguilar’s vice president.

Ramírez Aguilar ran unopposed for the position.
