Mexico’s government could unveil a key infrastructure investment plan as early as Sept. 15 which would include private sector participation in energy and communications projects, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Monday, Sept. 7.

“We have already made significant headway. It’s just a matter of reaching an agreement (as to when) so that the plan is presented here,” AMLO said at the National Palace during his regular morning press conference.

“I hope the plan will be presented by Sept. 15.”

In November 2019, AMLO’s administration announced it was spearheading a National Infrastructure Agreement between the public and private sectors to invest some 859 billion pesos (about $40 billion) in some 150 projects in the areas of transportation, telecommunications, basic services, tourism and energy.

The Mexican Congress will present the proposed 2021 budget on Tuesday, Sept. 8, which the president has described as “austere.”

The Mexican economy, Latin America’s second-largest after Brazil, could shrink by 10.5 percent in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic, according to the International Monetary Fund.
