Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) tested positive for covid-19 on Sunday, Jan. 24, according to a tweet posted by him late Sunday afternoon.

In the tweet, which began, “I am sorry to inform you that I have contracted covid-19,” AMLO stated that his symptoms were mild but that he was currently under medical care.

“As always, I am optimistic and we shall move forward,” he wrote.

He also said that Mexican Interior Secretary Olga Sánchez Cordero will represent him at his daily morning press briefings during the time he is under medical treatment.

AMLO has famously ignored recommended medical protocols such as social distancing and mask-wearing, falsely telling supporters that eating a junk-food-free diet and carrying good-fortune tokens such as a four-leaf clover or a two-dollar bill, would protect them from covid-19 infection.

The 67-year-old López Obrador is considered high risk for complications from covid because he has high blood pressure and is overweight.

As of Sunday, Jan. 24, more than 1.7 million Mexicans had contracted covid and nearly 150,000 had died from the disease, although most experts believe the real figures are much higher since testing is not generally practiced.
