After more than a year of partial, intermediate and uncertain lockdowns due to the covid-19 pandemic, both Mexico City and the neighboring State of Mexico (Edoméx) will officially enter the realm of green on the country’s coronavirus risk traffic light system as of Monday, June 7.

Thanks to an proactive citywide vaccination program, and a corresponding drop in both hospitalizations and deaths from covid, the majority of the great metropolitan area will now be able to return to normal activities, Eduardo Clark, head of the Digital Agency of the Capital Government, announced Friday, June 4.

Currently, hospital occupancy in the city is at just 9 percent, he said, the lowest it has been since May 2020.

Also, only 92 deaths were registered in Mexico City last week, the first time that that figure was below 100 since mid-2020.

Clark said that there are no indications that the capital will face a covid resurgence, but warned that everyone should continue practicing sanitary measures such as mask-wearing, hand-washing and social-distancing.

Under the new green light categorization, schools will be allowed to reopen for in-person classes and cultural centers, nurseries, hotels, department stores and shopping centers will be able to operated at up to 60 percent capacity with no restrictions on hours.

Also, restaurants will be able to operate round-the-clock with indoor service, and starting on June 14, outdoor sporting events, group gym classes and conventions will be allowed.
