The number of active covid-19 cases in Mexico during the week of June 13 through June 19 surged by 19 percent compared to the previous week, the Public Health Secretariat reported on Friday, July 2.

Mexico City and the State of Mexico (Edoméx) had the highest number of active cases, with more than 3,000 reported cases each during that week, followed by Baja California Sur, Tabasco, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Sonora and Nuevo León.

There was also an increase in the number of covid deaths, with 155 more cases for a total of 233,580.

The government has recently intensified its efforts to try to vaccinate more people, but the rollout has been hampered by government bureaucracy and political manipulations.

Also, the more contagious Delta covid variant, which first appeared in India, is now threatening to produce a third surge of the disease in Mexico.
