On Monday, Aug. 9, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) had a phone call with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, joined by Mexican Secretary of the Foreign Relations Marcelo Ebrard, to ensure a further supply of vaccinations against covid-19 from the United States to Mexico.

“We are going to talk on Monday to give continuity to our agenda of joint collaboration, and I am sure that we will also receive additional support, there are commitments so that we have more vaccines delivered by the United States government,” said López Obrador ahead of the time in a press conference from border city Juárez on Sunday, Aug. 8.

He further mentioned that the United States had previously committed to sending Mexico 1.35 million doses of the one-shot Janssen vaccine created by Johnson & Johnson. Mexico previously received 1.35 million doses of Janssen from its northern neighbors back in June, which was used to vaccinate along the border.

“This conversation will take place within the framework of high-level dialogue and the spirit of binational collaboration,” Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Relations said in a statement before the call. “There is a common vision between Mexico and the United States on different issues. We are working together to expand the doses of vaccines available in Mexico and address the root causes of migration.”

While requesting further help in Mexico’s vaccination scheme, López Obrador made sure to note the nation’s help to various other countries throughout Central and South America.

“Just as we received these donations, we are also supporting other countries with vaccines. We have sent vaccines to Paraguay, Bolivia, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic,” added AMLO.
