According to Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua), a total of 75 water dams across the country have reached 100 percent capacity, putting nearby regions at risk of flooding.

The 75 dams in question, mainly located in Mexico’s central and southeast, store approximately 20 percent of the nation’s reservoir water supply.

Conagua likewise pointed out that 210 of the nation’s largest dams are currently 2.8 percent above their historic water levels, potentially presenting challenges in the future if heavy rains continue.

“Let us remember that we have had very signficant rains in the center of Mexico,” said Jesús Montes Ortiz, manager of Conagua’s Surface Waters sector.
