Fido and Whiskers will soon have their very own government identification number in Mexico City.

According to a new capital law launched by the Mexico City Animal Care Agency (Agatan) and due to take effect in November, all pets will need to be registered and given a Unique Companion Animal Registry (RUAC) number, similar to the Unique National Identification (CURP) currently required for all Mexicans and permanent residents in the country.

The RUAC will include the name of the pet, age, how long it has lived at its current address, how it was acquired, its species and breed.

In addition, the owner’s name, age, level of education, telephone number, address and type of home must be reported through a Mexico City government portal.
