Mexico’s hometown hero Sergio “Checo” Pérez didn’t disappoint at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Mexico City on Sunday, Nov. 7, grabbing third place in that leg of the world’s most important auto racing competition and becoming the first Mexican ever to take the podium in the country.

Pérez — along with fellow Red Bull racer Dutchman Max Verstappen, who came in first for the third time to become the most-winning driver in the Mexico Grand Prix, and seven-time winner Briton Max Verstappen, who took second place — were received by a robust, standing-room-only crowd at Mexico’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez after the 71-lap race along a 4.304-kilometer circuit.

The Mexico City victory represented a third podium in the 2021 Grand Prix for the 31-year-old Pérez, who previously had never finished higher than seventh place at home.
