At the close of 2021’s third quarter, the share of Mexico’s economy that was informal increased by 14.16 percent, representing more than 31.4 million workers, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

That figures represents an increase of nearly 4 million more people added to the country’s informal economy this year.

On average, Mexico’s current rate of informal labor is now 56.3 percent nationwide, the highest it has ever been, but there are states such as Oaxaca and Chiapas where the comparable figure is a high as 80 percent, while in the northern states of Coahuila and Nuevo León it is just 37 percent.

According to Inegi data, the current figure is 2.1 percentage points higher than in the same period last year, when it was registered at 54.1 percent.
