Just one day after Mexican Foreign Relations (SRE) Secretary Marcelo Ebrard announced that the Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) government was beginning negotiations for Qatar Airways to open direct flights to Mexico, using the  Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), the Middle Eastern airlines on Wednesday, April 6, contradicted Ebrard, saying it has no plans to use the new air hub.

“We can confirm that Qatar Airways does not have plans to commence operations to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport,” said a Qatar Airways spokesman in a written statement.

The airline made no further comment and would not confirm or deny whether negotiations to establish the direct flight were underway.

So far, only one international airlines, Conviasa of Venezuela, is using the controversial airport, one of AMLO’s pet projects, which critics have said is not up to international standards and is too small, expensive and hard to access.
