Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) flew to Cuba on Sunday, May 8, to meet with that island nation’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel.

During his daylong visit, López Obrador, who was accompanied by his top military brass, placed flowers at a monument for Cuban poet José Martí, who is considered the ideologue of the Cuban revolution, and received the José Martí decoration, the highest distinction in Cuba, from Díaz-Canel.

He also agreed with Díaz-Canal to continue strengthening the “historic ties of brotherhood and fraternity” between the countries and “consolidate a new stage in the bilateral relationship,” signing two binational mechanisms to “promote the development of social, economic, educational and cultural actions for the benefit of the peoples of both countries.”

During his visit, AMLO publicly expressed his condolences for the unfortunate deaths of at least 30 Cubans who died during a hotel explosion on Friday, May 6, caused by a gas leak.

Notably, the Mexican president did not, however, make any mention of the war in Ukraine or express condolences for the presumed deaths of 90 people who died on Sunday in a Russian bombing of a school in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk.
