The Zócalo main plaza in downtown Mexico City will be the venue for the VIII Festival of Indigenous Cultures, People and Communities from Friday, Aug. 5, through Sunday, Aug. 21, the capital’s Culture Secretariat announced late last week.

The event, which will have as its guests of honor members of the often-marginalized Afro-Mexican communities of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Veracruz, will include an exhibition of a wide variety of craft products, artistic presentations by more than 100 indigenous artists, conferences and workshops.

Also invited, within the framework of the International Decade of Afro-Descendants, are representatives of Venezuela’s Wayúu and Warao peoples.

The festival, which the city government is dedicating to the 825,000 Mexico City residents who consider themselves to be indigenous, will be open to the general public.
