Mexico City’s Orquesta Típica, an orchestra composed of traditional instruments and musicians, will represent the capital at Mexico’s 50th edition of the International Cervantino Festival (FIC) in Guanajuato, city officials announced Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The orchestra, which has been performing for more than 138 years, will present a Musical Heritage of Mexico concert on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at the Temple of the Society of Jesus Oratory of San Felipe Neri, in downtown Guanajuato.

The FIC, popularly known as El Cervantino, is a festival which takes place each fall in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato and is considered the second-largest culture fest worldwide.

The festival first originated in the mid 20th century, when short plays by Spanish playwright Miguel de Cervantes (of “Don Quixote” fame) were performed in the city’s plazas.

It has since become a multidisciplinary festival of international culture.

This year it runs from Oct. 12 through Oct. 30.
