In yet another act of autocratic morality, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on Wednesday, Dec. 7, called on the Mexican public to boycott the consumption of Coca-Cola and other carbonated soft drinks.

Speaking during his daily presser at the National Palace Wednesday morning, AMLO said that Coca-Cola “is not good for your health and (the Coca-Cola Company) has raised the price.”

Coca-Cola products increased their prices between one and three pesos as of December.

Consequently, López Obrador said, families in Mexico should “take advantage of the increase in the prices of Coca-Cola products to promote less soft drink consumption in the country.”

“Coca-Cola is like potato chips, ” he continued.

“Not only is it harmful, it is expensive.”

To make the Mexican population aware of Coke’s potential damage to the body, he recalled one of the uses it was given in the past.

Mexico is the country with the highest per capita consumption of Coca-Cola beverages, at an average of 163 liters per person per year according to a study by Yale University.

This high consumption of sugary drinks not only claims the lives of 24,000 Mexicans a year, but also brings with it higher public health expenses to treat associated conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

The Coca-Cola FEMSA bottling company in Mexico announced at the end of November that the prices of its products would increase from one to three pesos starting in December, the third price adjustment so far this year.

Coca-Cola said that the increase in cost reflects higher costs for PET and sweeteners.

  • FEMSA owns Oxxo. Good luck with all that.

Consumption will go down when prices go up, although there’s an element of addiction and inelasticity there. So maybe if prices go up 15% then demand will fall 10%.
But 10% wouldn’t fix Mexico’s problem with Coca Cola.

    …and what was it?
