Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on Wednesday, Dec. 14, named Sergio Céspedes Peregrina as the new substitute governor of the central state of Puebla.

Céspedes Peregrina replaces Miguel Barbosa, who died suddenly on Tuesday, Dec. 13, just one day before he was due to present his fourth annual State of the State Address.

Céspedes Peregrina has had an extensive career across various Mexican political parties, consolidating with his membership in the president’s leftist National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party.

He first came to the Puebla Congress as a representative of his district for the centralist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and also served as party leader at the municipal level for the PRI.

In 2018, he left the PRI to seek the mayoralty of Tepeaca under the initials of the Citizen Movement (MC) party, with which he won.

In that campaign, the MC competed in coalition with the conservative National Action Party (PAN).

Céspedes Peregrina joined Lopez Obrador’s Morena for the 2021 electoral process. He requested a license as mayor and sought and won a local deputation again.
