The German automotive company BMW announced Friday, Feb. 3, that it will invest 800 million euros in a new electric car plant in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosí.

The new plant will produce the brand’s Neue Klasse electric sports sedans and will begin production in 2027.

The new factory will be located within the same perimeters as the current BMW San Luis Potosí property in the heart of the Bajío industrial corridor, at the Logistik II Industrial Park in Villa de Reyes.

In order to consolidate the BMW investment, the San Luis Potosi government, led by Governor Ricardo Gallardo Cardona of the Green Party (PVEM), which is closely aligned with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s leftist National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party, agreed to donate a 20-hectare parcel of land adjacent to the current BMW plant.

Nearly 1,000 new jobs are expected to be created by the new complex, which will begin construction in 2024.

The new electric car plant will have a maximum production capacity of 175,000 cars annually.
