Another Member of Monreal Ávila Family Murdered

Just three days after a member of one of Mexico’s leading political families, the Monreal Ávila clan, was shot to death in the central state of Zacatecas, a second member of the family was murdered in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Jorge Antonio Monreal Martínez, the nephew of Zacatecas Governor David Monreal Ávila from the leftist National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party, was a social development worker for the Fresnillo City Council.
He as shot dead in front of his home on Saturday, and his son, who was accompanying him at the time, was also shot but survived.
On Wednesday, Feb. 7, Juan Pérez Guardado, director of Social Development and the brother-in-law of federal Senator Ricardo Monreal Ávila, was also murdered.
Mexico is witnessing a spate of killings as the June 2 presidential and parliamentarian elections approach.
Leading up to the 2021 midterm elections, at least 91 politicians were murdered, according to one leading Mexican consulting firm, and this year is gearing up to be nearly twice as gruesome.
