According to new data from the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), the number of passengers traveling through the Mexico City area’s newest airport continued increasing during the first four months of 2024.
The terminal, a pet project of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) following his cancellation of the planned New Mexico City International Airport (NAICM), reportedly handled 1.6 million passengers between January and April of this year across 14,285 flights.
Likewise, the AIFA brought in 516,000 passengers through the terminal during April alone, breaking the airport’s monthly record.
Notably, only 5.8 percent of the AIFA’s travelers were international.
Though the airport’s cargo transport levels decreased slightly from last year’s figures, the AIFA still managed to eclipse the cargo transported through the Mexico City International Airport (AICM).
The AIFA’s traveler numbers are only likely to grow throughout the rest of the year as the Tren Suburbano, a train connecting Mexico City to the terminal, helps facilitate the arrival of passengers to the airport.
