Mexican conservative National Action Party (PAN) Senator Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez is expected to submit the tie-breaking decision in favor of passing the in-power National Regeneration Movement’s (Morena) controversial judicial reform during the legislation’s vote on Wednesday, Sep. 11, much to the disappointed of his party and its opposition allies.

According to Yunes Marquez’s comments, the politician was disappointed that his party tried to sway him from voting in favor of the proposed changes to Mexico’s judicial branch.

“I cannot accept that the meaning of my vote is imposed on me. I have never seen an attempt to impose it based on threats and aggression,” said the senator. “They try to classify us depending on our vote as angels or demons. I do not agree with restricting freedom through threats or pressure.”

The PAN official went on to note that if the changes to the Mexican Constitution – which would see Mexico’s judges elected by popular vote – do not pass, President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum would be able to appoint multiple magistrates to the Supreme Court Justice of the Nation (SCJN) during her own presidential term.

“Is it better for the President to continue appointing Ministers or are we going to a new model with the vote of millions of citizens?” continued Yunes Marquez.

“Mexico will not be destroyed if it is approved nor will the justice system automatically change,” added the senator.

The vote on the judicial reform, which has already passed through the Chamber of Deputies, is expected to be completed in the Mexican Senate on Wednesday. Sep. 11.
