Mexico’s autonomous electoral body the National Electoral Institute (INE) officially initiated the process for the popular election of members of the Mexican Judicial Branch on Monday, September 23, just weeks after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) controversial constitutional changes to the judicial reform passed through Mexican Congress.

The new judicial elections are set to take place on June 1, 2025, and will now see the ministers, magistrates, and judges of the Judicial Power of the Federation (PJF) voted into power by the Mexican public.

Guadalupe Taddei, the president of the INE, led the ceremony, which was attended by 10 INE councilors and special guests. Taddei assured that the election process would be authentic, emphasizing the institute’s commitment to conducting the process in a “precise, objective, and impartial” manner.

“We say to the Mexicans: we have already begun and we are ready to organize this extraordinary process. Let there be no doubt, we will work with the same professionalism that has given us national and international recognition, and most importantly, that has served to earn the trust of all Mexicans,” said Taddei at the time.

Taddei also acknowledged the unprecedented nature of these judicial elections, citing new challenges and rules they bring with them. Despite internal disagreement within the INE’s General Council about the election, Taddei expressed the institute’s celebration of the public’s involvement in the country’s public affairs.

“Mexico has been an international example for the quality of its elections and for the great role of citizens in the process of democratic exercise. These are the conditions for June 1, 2025, to be one of the most transparent and clear moments of our democratic life,” added Taddei.

“We welcome the opportunity to strengthen the rule of law through a transparent and legitimate electoral process,” she continued. “I assure you that the rules will be clear and fair for all participants.”
