On Wednesday, Nov. 6, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo (CSP) reassured her constituents that there is “no cause for concern” for Mexico following Tuesday’s reelection of former U.S. President Donald Trump into the Oval Office.
CSP’s words of caution come just two days after Trump threatened to levy high tariffs against Mexico, which currently stands as the United States’ number one trade partner in the world if Sheinbaum did not address the flow of drugs and migrants from Mexico to the United States.
“President Trump has already spoken out, but it is prudent to wait,” said Sheinbaum. “And to all Mexicans: there is no cause for concern; to our countrymen and women, to their families who are here, there is no cause for concern.”
“Mexico is moving forward. We are a free, independent, sovereign country, and there will be good relations with the United States, and I am convinced of that,” the Mexican federal executive continued.
Sheinbaum also said that she would refrain from congratulating Trump on his victory or issuing an official statement from Mexico until all U.S. polling stations had officially finished counting votes.
“There is news that President Trump won, and we are going to wait for some states to finish counting votes today for us to be able to give the official announcement, first to see how the missing states advance and the final position of both candidates,” continued CSP.
“We are going to wait, the first part of the process has not finished yet, and we are going to be very responsible to be able to make the official announcement,” added Sheinbaum.
The Mexican federal executive went on to address Trump’s concerns about immigration and drug trafficking at the U.S.-Mexico border, saying that the two nations would “maintain a high-level dialogue” on the issues while reassuring markets that the United States and Mexico would maintain a positive commercial relationship and that “there is a lot of unity and strength of the Mexican economy.”
