Mexican mountaineer Viridiana Álvarez Chávez became the first Latin American woman to summit K2 on Friday, July 20.

K2, located in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range, is the world’s second-highest mountain and has long been regarded as a far more dangerous and perilous peak to climb.

While K2 looms on the shadow of Everest, K2 is generally regarded as the bigger challenge due to the technical difficulty required to climb it and the remoteness of the mount.

Álvarez previously summited Everest during the 2017 climb season.
