FIGHTING OFF THE ELEMENTS

By THÉRÈSE MARGOLIS

Between pollution, UV rays and the endless list of terrible things we expose ourselves to every day — lack of sleep, poor diet, stress, tobacco, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise and the list goes on — we are doing more to age our skin and bodies than Mother Nature and our personal gene pools ever could.

At least 40 percent of premature aging can be reversed. Photo: Chatelaine

In fact, dermatologists say that 80 percent of aging — particularly premature aging — is the result of external, avoidable factors.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that at least 40 percent of premature aging is reversible.

A lot has to do with reversing some of your negative habits and revamping your lifestyle (yeah, I’m talking about giving up the cigarettes and Twinkies).

But some little steps, like using sunscreen and other skin-protecting products, can also help dramatically to undo years of damage.

So here are a list of new products that can help you protect yourself from damage by outside elements and undo some of the harm you have already suffered.

Fighting Blue Light Damage

It’s a fact: New scientific research has shown that blue light, also known as HEV (think cell phone and computer light), can  damage and prematurely age skin.

Yup, high-energy visible light emitted by our devices could be as aging as sun damage.

HEV is present in daylight, but is also emitted by fluorescent lighting and LEDs, including TV screens, smartphones, tablets and computers.

But now, Uriage has launched a whole new line of Age Protect products, reinforced with the brand’s nourishing thermal water from the French Alps, especially aimed at fighting the effects of HEV.

Now available in Mexico, Uriage Age Protect products are the first designed to protect skin from the damaging effects of blue light, as well as the other harsh daily aging aggressions that skin sustains, including UVA and UVB rays, pollution, stress and fatigue.

The line includes an Age Protect Multi-Action Intensive Serum, which, in addition to protecting skin against the elements, fights wrinkles, sagging, dark spots, dullness and under-eye bagging.

There is also an Uriage Age Protect Multi-Action Eye Contour cream that targets wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles, plus blue light fatigue.

An all-purpose Age Protect Multi-Action Cream helps combat early signs of premature aging like fine lines and a lack of firmness, and the Uriage Age Protect Multi-Action Detox Night Cream soothes and regenerates skin to leave it looking fresher and younger.

Renew and Repair

One of the most effective ways to erase the signs of aging is through a chemical peel.

But peeling can be very harsh on your skin, leaving it red and inflamed, as well as super-susceptible to UV rays.

Now, Guerlain has introduced a super-mild, super-nourishing Abeille Royale Double R Renew & Repair Serum, enriched with the brand’s exclusive black bee honey and royal jelly from the island of Ouessant.

Double R Renew & Repair combines ultimate corrective technology with a soft-peel treatment for highly effective action against fine lines, sagging, discolorations and dull skin.

This unique two-part formula soaks into the skin to provide the benefits of science combined with those of nature to reveal a glowing complexion, smoothing wrinkles and minimizing imperfections.

In order to produce a gentle peeling, Double R combines three types of natural alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) — lactic, glycolic and citric to deliver twice the results in just two weeks of use.

The product is  designed to promote skin renewal without harsh chemicals.

At the same time, Guerlain’s repair technology stimulates the skin’s collagen and hyaluronic acid production.

Ushant honey, rich in amino acids, has trace elements and fructose to contribute to tissue repair, while royal jelly lifts and tones skin.

The results are a smoother, more luminous complexion with less visible wrinkles and pores and more refined contours.
