Newly instated Puebla Governor Martha Erika Alonso was killed in a helicopter crash, along with her husband, Federal Senator and former Puebla Governor Rafael Moreno Valle, and three other people, on Monday, Dec. 24.

The helicopter crashed suddenly shortly after takeoff from a heliport in Puebla’s Colonia Santa Maria Coronango area of Puebla.

The cause of the crash is yet unknown, but Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that he will order a full investigation of the incident.

Alonso, the first female governor of Puebla and a staunch member of the conservative National Action Party (PAN), took office on Dec. 14.

Her husband was also from the PAN, and served as the state’s governor from 2011 to 2017.
