Charred Shootout Victims Discovered in Tamaulipas

A drug gang faceoff at the Los Tres Portones ranch on the outskirts of the northern Mexican city of Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, resulted in the deaths of at least 20 people – 17 charged beyond recognition – and six burned vehicles, according to local security forces, who discovered the crime scene on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

The apparent shootout was the result of an ongoing turf war between the Cartel del Noreste from the border town of Nuevo León and the Los Metros gang, based out of Reynosa, local authorities said.

The northeastern state of Tamaulipas has for nearly a decade been a major conduit for drug shipments and the scene of some of the nation’s worst drug war massacres.
