The European Union (EU) will donate 7 billion euros (about $7.8 million) to Mexico to support social justice programs, such as women’s defense programs and indigenous rights organizations, and to help in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, EU Embassy Chargé de Affaires in Mexico Jean Pierre Bau announced during an internet press conference on Thursday, June 11.

The money, which is part of a larger EU 35-million-euro financial outreach program called Team Europe aimed at helping EU partners, will be given directly to Mexico to help it overcome the dire economic and medical crisis it is currently facing, Bau said.

At the same time, the EU will send a team of 12 German epidemiologists next month who will work with and help train Mexican specialists in the treatment of the covid-19 virus, based on that European country’s recent experience with the disease.

Germany will likewise donate between 30,000 and 100,000 covid-19 tests, along with much-needed face masks and equipment for respirators.
