Mexico City’s famed floating gardens, Xochimilco, a major tourist destination and center for the sale of fresh plants, reopened to the public on Wednesday, Aug. 19,

Xochimilco’s more than 1,800 shops and tourist boats closed down in early May — just prior to the crucially important May 10 Mother’s Day crowd –due to the coronavirus pandemic, representing a loss of more than 90 percent of its commercial revenues for the local community.

The district’s tourists boats have now begun operations with mandatory social distancing and mask-wearing practices.
