Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) announced Sunday, Aug. 30, that he is replacing David León as the head of the new state-run medication distributor Birmex after the latter was seen in two controversial videos showing him turning over large bundles to AMLO’s brother, Pio López Obrador.
The new head of Birmex will be Pedro Zenteno Santaella, the former director of the Social Security and Services Institute for Government Workers’ (ISSSTE) Administrative Norms division and a former federal deputy for AMLO’s National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party.
On at least two occasions, León was filmed giving money to the president’s brother in 2015, cash which AMLO has claimed was contributions made by party supporters to help sponsor his presidential campaign in Chiapas.
