Mexico’s Navy seized 2.9 tons of cocaine after intercepting a boat off the country’s southeast Caribbean coast, the Naval Secretariat said on Wednesday. Sept. 2.

Naval infantrymen also detained three suspects during the operation late Tuesday some 85 nautical miles east of Mahahual, a resort town in the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo , near the border with Belize.

According to the report, infantrymen descended onto the small vessel from a helicopter and secured the shipment weighing approximately 2,960 kilograms.

The operation was carried out after maritime and air surveillance patrols spotted the boat moving erratically and at high speed off the coast.

Drug traffickers often use speedboats to smuggle cocaine from South or Central America toward the U.S. market.
