Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said Friday, Oct. 30, that he intends to name Rosa Icela Rodríguez, who served as his head of municipal security when he was mayor of Mexico City, to replace Alfonso Durazo as the nation’s new security and civil protection secretary.

Speaking during his daily morning press conference, AMLO said that he would officially offer the post to Rodríguez later in the day and would await her response.

“I am announcing this now, because even she is not aware of it. The position will be held by a woman. And it will be Rosa Icela Rodríguez, if she accepts,” he said.

The president went onto note that Rodríguez is currently at home recovering from a bout with covid-19,so he was unable to speak to her prior to the announcement.

Durazo, a close friend and ally of AMLO, resigned from the position effective Friday in order to run for governor of the state of Sonora.

“I still don’t know if she will accept, because she is just now learning that she is my choice for the position,” he said.

In addition to serving under AMLO during his stint as the capital’s mayor, Rodríguez also served under successive Mexico City Mayors Marcelo Ebrard, Miguel Ángel Mancera and Claudia Sheinbaum.
