In response to a request from Mexico’s Foreign Relations Secretariat (SRE), on Wednesday, Nov. 11, the French Embassy here presented the Mexican Red Cross  with a check for the some of 60,000 euros — roughly 1.45 million pesos — the French Embassy said.

The French donation will be used to help families affected by tropical storm Eta, which plowed through southern Mexico earlier this month, leading to severe flooding in the states of Tabasco and Chiapas.

According to French government sources, the money will go to support 732 families in Tabasco and 522 families in Chiapas, all of whom were leave homeless by the storm.

The donation will also provide food, clean water and basic hygiene supplies to 2,928 residents of Tabasco and 2,088 residences of Chiapas.

Newly arrived French Ambassador to Mexico Jean-Pierre Asvazadourian expressed his government’s sincere condolences to all those victimized by the storm and flooding, believed to be the worst to hit the region in more than a century.

Private French companies with capital holdings in Mexico Airbus, Axa, Danone, Décathlon, Faurecia, Michelin and Perenco also made donations to rescue and support efforts to the tune of 1.4 million pesos.

Asvazadourian is slated to visit the Chiapas on Thursday, Nov. 12, and Friday, Nov. 13.
