Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said Thursday, Dec. 31, that all Mexicans over the age of 60 will have free access to the coronavirus vaccine by the end of March.

In a message released over social media, in which he also stated that the country will regain more than 650,000 jobs lost to the covid-19 pandemic by April, AMLO said that by the end of the first trimester of 2021, all frontline health workers and elderly Mexicans would be vaccinated if they chose to be, although receiving the vaccine would not be obligatory.

IMexicans with chronic health problems that make them more susceptible to contracting the virus would have access to the vaccine in April, he said.

López Obrador likewise said that the government has set aside more than 25 billion pesos to pay for the vaccines.

However, since Mexico has committed to buy vaccines not only from Pfizer-BioNtech, but also from AstraZenica, the Chinese pharmaceutical company CanSino and the Russian Sputnik, he did not indicate which version would be made available to Mexican citizens.
