World super middleweight boxing champion Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez on Saturday, Feb. 27, outpunched Turkish challenger Avni Yildirim to retain his World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) belts at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.

During the first two rounds, the 30-year-old Álvarez, a native of Guadalajara, México, studied Yildirim’s style, and by the third round ,he launched a furious assault on his Turkish competitor, sending Yildirim tumbling to the canvas. Yildirim got up and Álvarez tried to finish him off.

Visibly groggy, Yildirim went to his corner only to find out that his managing team had already thrown in the towel. The referee declared the end of the fight as a technical knock-out.

Álvarez is currently considered to be boxing’s biggest star and its best pound-for-pound fighter.
