Just in time for the Semana Santa (Holy Week) holiday season, air quality in Mexico City hit a new low on Sunday, March 28, with small-particle pollution soaring to almost six times acceptable limits, a level not seen for years in the Mexican capital.
The worst hit area of the city was Iztapalapa, with contamination levels reaching 581 points on a scale in which 100 is considered the highest acceptable level, but air quality decreased citywide.
Notwithstanding, the capital government issued no formal pollution alert or “hoy no circula” traffic limitations.
