Nearly 179,000 undocumented migrants were encountered along the U.S.-Mexico border in April, the highest one-month total in more than two decades, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Tuesday, May 11, although they said that there were fewer unaccompanied children.

According to Customs and Border Protection figures, 17,171 unaccompanied migrant children were found in April, down from almost 19,000 in March.

The Border Patrol said that it now has only 455 minors in its custody, a more than 90 percent drop from a peak in March of 5,767.
