Gregorio Avendaño Jiménez, Mexico’s first recorded victim of the dreaded “black fungus” murcomycosis infection that killed hundreds of covid-19 patients in India, died Monday, June 7, at the La Raza National Medical Center, relatives reported.
Despite efforts to remove the infected tissue through surgery on aggressive surgery Friday, June 5, the 34-year-old patient continued to deteriorate in health following his diagnosis of the condition one week earlier.
Black fungus is an aggressive and opportunistic infection that usually attacks people with compromised immune systems.
It is not contagious and is considered rare, but there have been a surge in murcomycosis infections worldwide related to the covid-19 pandemic.
