A third wave of covid-19 is currently in the midst of affecting Mexico after the highly-contagious Delta variant made its way into the country, causing cases to surge once more.
Just on Tuesday, July 13, alone, more than 11,000 people tested positive for the virus, the highest new case count in a single day since January of the same year.
More than 63,000 cases are estimated to be active right now, and the epidemic curve has likewise grown by 23 percent in the past week.
Undersecretary of Health Hugo López-Gatell pointed out that, despite the increase in cases, hospitalizations have not gone up and the death rate has gone down thanks to Mexico’s inoculation plan, which first focused on the country’s older and more vulnerable population.
However, Mexican children, who have not been vaccinated against the virus, now are beginning to contract the Delta variant in record numbers compared to the previous iteration of covid-19, which was seemingly less transmittable among minors.
