Mexican journalist Abraham Mendoza Mendoza was murdered on Monday, July 19, in the parking lot of a gym on Madero Poniente Avenue in the city of Morelia, Michoacán, according to local police authorities.
According to witnesses, Mendoza Mendoza was surrounded by his attackers and shot at point-blank range as he was leaving the gym, located in the city’s Bocanegra neighborhood.
It was also reported that a bystander was injured by a stray bullet.
The state police later arrested the main suspects in the attack, who tried to escape aboard a white SEAT Ibiza car that was presumably also stolen.
Since 2013, Mendoza Mendoza was a reporter and news anchor for the local Grupo ACIR radio station and also worked as a correspondent for the national Grupo ACIR chain.
He likewise worked for TV Azteca Michoacán and Central TV.
In the last 24 months, a total of 20 journalists have been murdered in Mexico, according to Reporters Without Borders.
