As the third wave of covid-19 infections in Mexico settles in, 85 percent of the 79,828 active cases of the disease in the country are concentrated in just 16 states, according to the epidemiological report of Tuesday, July 20, issued by the Public Health Secretariat (SSA).

The highest concentrations of new cases are in states with heavily urbanized areas, with Mexico City registering 28,113 cases, the State of Mexico (Edoméx) registering 7,735, Jalisco registering 3,869 cases and Nuevo León registering 3,682.

However, there were also states with high tourism influxes such as Sinaloa, Veracruz, Quintana Roo, Baja California Sur, Yucatán, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Nayarit with high concentrations of cases.

The disease continues to spread nationwide.

Just on Tuesday alone, 13,853 new cases of the virus were registered nationwide, the highest record since Jan. 31, when the country was in the midst of the second wave of the pandemic.

And between Jan. 7 and Jan. 20, there were 92,349 active cases, with 61 percent of hospital occupancy in general beds and 53 percent occupancy of beds with ventilators, the SSA reported.

Faced with this third wave, the federal government modified the epidemiological traffic light and relaxed the restrictions for economic activities.
