Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) on Monday, Sept. 27, charged the National Guard (GN) with yet another responsibility, the creation of a special body dedicated to recovering stolen historical and archaeological pieces.
During the inauguration of a dual exhibition “The Grandeur of Mexico” at the National Museum of Anthropology and the Secretariat of Public Education, López Obrador pointed out that in Italy, the police have a department dedicated to the protection and recovery of cultural artifacts.
“We are going to follow the example of Italy,” he said. “I have already instructed the National Guard to create a special team for this purpose.”
Earlier in the day, AMLO decorated the commander of the Italian police for helping in the recovery of 17 pieces of pre-Hispanic Mexican art which were due to go up for auction earlier this month.
