Mexico now ranks in first place among Latin American countries when it comes to air pollution caused by electricity generation, according to Cepalstat, a data and statistics platform of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Mexico emissions from electricity are 2.2 times higher than those of Brazil, three times those of Argentina and almost six times those generated by Chile, according to a Cepalstat report issued earlier this month.

Mexican greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the air from the energy sector, specifically for electricity, reached 198.2 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2020, according to the most up-to-date data for all the economies of the region, the report said.

In transportation, manufacturing and construction, Mexico ranked in second place, surpassed only by Brazil.
