According to National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) figures, a total of 200,256 Mexicans died of covid-19 infections in 2020, a figure that is 34.7 percent higher than the 148,629 cases reported by the Public Health Secretariat (SSA) at the close of last year.

The SSA figures only counted covid deaths that occurred in hospitals, while the Inegi numbers included registered deaths both in hospitals and at home and other places.

The total deaths from covid-19 in Mexico in 2020 represented close to the entire population of Mexico City’s Cuajimalpa precinct and half that of the Benito Juárez precinct.

In 2020, covid-19 constituted the second cause of death nationwide (after heart disease), with 18.4 percent of the all covid cases registered last year proving fatal.

As a result of the covid-19 pandemic, the total number of deaths in Mexico exceeded one million in one year for the first time in the nation’s history.
